چکیده

We study a family of equivalence relations on Sn, the group of permutations on n letters, created in a manner similar to that of the Knuth relation and the forgotten relation. For our purposes, two permutations are in the same equivalence class if one can be reached from the other through a series of pattern-replacements using patterns whose order permutations are in the same part of a predetermined partition of Sc. When the partition is of S3 and has one nontrivial part and that part is of size greater than two, we provide formulas for the number of classes created in each previously unsolved case. When the partition is of S3 and has two nontrivial parts, each of size two (as do the Knuth and forgotten relations), we enumerate the classes for 13 of the 14 unresolved cases. In two of these cases, enumerations arise which are the same as those yielded by the Knuth and forgotten relations. The reasons for this phenomenon are still largely a mystery.

N ov 2 00 6 Permutations Avoiding a Nonconsecutive Instance of a 2 - or 3 - Letter Pattern

We count permutations avoiding a nonconsecutive instance of a two-or three-letter pattern, that is, the pattern may occur but only as consecutive entries in the permutation. Two-letter patterns give rise to the Fibonacci numbers. The counting sequences for the two representative three-letter patterns, 321 and 132, have respective generating functions (1 + x 2)(C(x) − 1)/(1 + x + x 2 − xC(x)) an...

Wilf classification of three and four letter signed patterns

We give some new Wilf equivalences for signed patterns which allow the complete classification of signed patterns of lengths three and four. The problem is considered for pattern avoidance by general as well as involutive signed permutations.

Equivalence Classes of Permutations Modulo Replacements Between 123 and Two-Integer Patterns

We explore a new type of replacement of patterns in permutations, suggested by James Propp, that does not preserve the length of permutations. In particular, we focus on replacements between 123 and a pattern of two integer elements. We apply these replacements in the classical sense; that is, the elements being replaced need not be adjacent in position or value. Given each replacement, the set...

A recursive bijective approach to counting permutations containing 3-letter patterns

We present a method, illustrated by several examples, to nd explicit counts of permutations containing a given multiset of three letter patterns. The method is recursive, depending on bijections to reduce to the case of a smaller multiset, and involves a consideration of separate cases according to how the patterns overlap. Speci cally, we use the method (i) to provide combinatorial proofs of B...
